Want to educate yourself for future in-demand jobs in Alabama? Think about becoming a computer software engineer or network systems analyst. Or maybe a pharmacist or industrial engineer.
Want a good job in the River Region? Computers, pharmacy or veterinary medicine seem to be the way to go in the next eight years or so.
These are the high demand occupations, according to the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations, Labor Market Information Division.
It makes lists every two years of the top 40 jobs for 10 geographic regions in Alabama, as well as the entire state. The Montgomery region includes Autauga, Butler, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties.
"Every two years we do a projection by industry," said Tonya Lee, statistician supervisor for the division. She said the industry projections consider several variables, including unemployment rates, closures around the state, announced job creation that will happen in the next two years and national projections.
From the industry projections come the occupation projections, Lee said. The U.S. Department of Labor requires the projections. Each state keeps a comparable list.
"The way we come up with the high demand list, we factor in three different variables," Lee said. "Wages, openings and growth."
