In any type of business, it’s important for a company to create the right culture and values. This is especially important in a pharmacy setting where your customer’s health is on the line. How can you build the right company culture and instill those values in employees? Here are a few tips.
Define your mission statement:
The creation of your mission statement is where company culture and values begin. When the company’s mission is clearly stated and understood by employees, it’s easy for employees to feel a sense of purpose. The mission statement should include how they expect employees to act and perform, as well as what the main vision of the company is.
Be an advocate for your employees:
Now that you have a mission statement and defined goals for your employees, act it out! Believe it or not, employees notice when leadership fails to acknowledge things deserving of praise. Those failures to acknowledge successes in your team can affect morale more than anything else you do. If someone in your organization has had exemplary performance that is in line with the goals set for them, give them the praise they deserve.
The most effective way to build a desired culture and set of values is for leadership to demonstrate – and advocate – for those values at all times. When your employees see that management is behind the push for a certain culture, they will be much more likely to buy in.
Over-communicate with members of your organization:
Missions and goals can only be attained if they are defined and clearly communicated.
This process starts when a new employee is hired. In their orientation, new employees should be acquainted with the mission, goals, and values of the pharmacy. This statement should also be found easily in the employee handbook.
When an employee’s actions further the organization’s goals and values, they should be recognized and rewarded! Doing this sets the tone for other employees, and will have them striving to meet the same expectations.
Overall, it is easy to instill the culture and values you want in your pharmacy as long as you keep the communication with your employees consistent. Tell your employees what you expect from them, practice what you preach, and watch how your company culture flourishes!
